The Process

How a Fence or Shed Build Runs

01

Layout, Property Lines and Permits

String lines and stakes marking a new fence line with utility locate paint in Onslow County, NC
Step 1
More fence disputes start at this stage than at any other, and they are expensive to fix once posts are in concrete. We sort out exactly where the line is and what the county will allow before anyone digs.
  • Property Line Verification: We work from your survey. If there is no survey, we will tell you to get one rather than guess and hand you a problem with your neighbor.
  • Permits and Setbacks: Onslow County has height limits and setback rules that differ between front and rear yards. We pull the permit as part of the job.
  • Utility Locates: NC811 is called before every post hole. This is not optional and it is not something to skip to save a day.
02

Material Selection

Step 2
Coastal Onslow County is hard on fencing. Salt air, humidity, and sustained wind all shorten the life of the wrong material, so we walk you through what actually lasts here rather than what is cheapest to install.
  • Pressure-Treated Wood Plank: The classic privacy fence. Affordable and repairable, and it needs sealing to hold up in this climate.
  • Composite Plank: Costs more up front, does not rot, gray out, or need staining. Popular with homeowners who do not want a maintenance project.
  • Vinyl: Low maintenance and clean-looking. We use heavier-gauge vinyl with reinforced rails, because thin vinyl panels do not survive coastal wind.
  • Ornamental Aluminum: The black powder-coated look. It will not rust like wrought iron, it does not block the view, and it is the usual choice for front yards, pool enclosures and gated entries.
03

Posts Set for Coastal Wind

Step 3
A fence fails at its posts, not at its panels. In sandy coastal soil with regular high wind, post depth and footing are the entire job. This is where cheap fence work gives itself away within two seasons.
  • Depth Below Frost and Into Bearing Soil: Posts go deep enough to hold in sandy soil rather than the minimum that gets the panels up fast.
  • Concrete Footings: Properly sized and crowned so water sheds away from the post instead of pooling against it.
  • Gate Posts Upsized: Gates carry moving weight and are the first thing to sag. Gate posts get larger footings and heavy hardware as standard.
04

Build, Gates and Cleanup

Step 4
Panels, gates and hardware go in, the site gets cleaned up, and we walk it with you. A gate that binds after the first wet season is the most common fencing complaint, so we set and test them carefully.
  • Consistent Line and Height: Runs strung and checked so the top line is straight across grade changes rather than following every dip.
  • Hot-Dip Galvanized Hardware: Coastal air destroys cheap fasteners. Hinges, latches and screws are rated for this environment.
  • Site Cleanup: Spoil from post holes hauled off, old fence removed and disposed of, and a magnetic sweep where hardware was involved.

The Details

What You Should Know Before You Hire

Fence and Shed Builders in Jacksonville NC & Onslow County

Fencing looks like the simplest thing a contractor can build, which is exactly why so much of it is built badly. The panels are easy. What determines whether a fence is still standing straight after five coastal seasons is the part nobody sees: how deep the posts went and what they were set in.

Parade Rest Services is a licensed, bonded and insured NC General Contractor serving Jacksonville, Richlands, Swansboro and the surrounding communities. We build wood, composite, vinyl and ornamental aluminum fencing, along with custom storage sheds built on site to match your home.

Why Coastal Fencing Is Different

Three things work against a fence in Onslow County. Sandy soil does not hold a post the way inland clay does. Sustained coastal wind treats a privacy fence like a sail, and every gust transfers that load straight into the footings. Salt air and humidity attack fasteners and untreated wood far faster than they would forty miles inland.

None of that is a reason to avoid a wood fence. It is a reason to set posts deeper, size the footings properly, and use hot-dip galvanized hardware instead of whatever came in the box. That is the difference between a fence that needs re-setting in three years and one that does not.

Fence Materials We Install

  • Pressure-treated wood plank — the traditional privacy fence. Most affordable, easily repaired board by board, and needs sealing to stay looking right in this climate.
  • Composite plank — higher up-front cost, no rot, no staining, no graying. The choice for homeowners who do not want a recurring maintenance job.
  • Vinyl — clean and low maintenance. We specify heavier-gauge panels with reinforced rails, because thin vinyl does not survive coastal wind.
  • Ornamental aluminum — powder-coated black is the common finish. Rust-proof, keeps sight lines open, and the standard answer for front yards, gated entries and pool enclosures.

Custom Sheds Built On Site

A shed dropped in the yard always looks like a shed dropped in the yard. We build on site, which means the roof pitch, siding and shingle color can match your house, and the dimensions fit your yard rather than a manufacturer's catalog.

Because we are also a roofing contractor, shed roofs get built to the same standard as a house roof: proper underlayment, correct flashing, and shingles that match what is already on your home. For larger buildings that need power or a finished interior, that falls under our construction and remodeling work.

Fencing as Part of an Outdoor Project

Fencing rarely stands alone. It is usually the last piece of a yard that also involves a deck or patio, a screened-in porch, or a broader outdoor living space. Running it through one general contractor means the fence line accounts for the patio grade and the gate lands where the walkway actually goes, instead of being fitted around work somebody else already finished.

Straight Pricing, Written Scope

Every estimate is line-itemed: materials, post count and depth, gates and hardware, permits, demolition and disposal. If we hit rock, an old buried footing, or a utility that was not marked, you get a photo and a price before we keep going.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of fence lasts longest in coastal North Carolina?

Ornamental aluminum and composite are the two that hold up best. Aluminum does not rust, rot, or need finishing, and because it does not present a solid face to the wind it handles gusts well. Composite will not rot or need staining. Pressure-treated wood is the most affordable and is perfectly workable here, but it needs sealing every few years or the salt air and humidity will gray and cup it. Vinyl is fine provided you use a heavier gauge with reinforced rails rather than thin builder-grade panels.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Onslow County?

Usually yes, and the rules differ by height and by whether the fence is in a front or rear yard. There are also setback requirements and, in some neighborhoods, HOA restrictions on material and color that are stricter than the county's. We pull the permit as part of the job and check the requirements before we quote, so nothing has to come back down.

How deep do fence posts need to go here?

Deeper than most people expect. Coastal soil is sandy and does not grip a post the way clay does, and Eastern NC sees sustained wind that a fence catches like a sail. We set posts to hold in the actual soil conditions on your property with properly sized concrete footings, and we upsize gate posts because gates carry moving weight and sag first. Post depth is the single biggest difference between a fence that lasts and one that leans in three years.

Can you build a shed to match my house?

Yes. We build sheds and workshop buildings on site rather than dropping a prefab unit in the yard, which means the siding, roof pitch and shingle color can match the house. It also means we can build to your dimensions instead of the sizes a manufacturer offers. Because we are also a roofing contractor, the shed roof is built to the same standard as a house roof.

Do you replace an existing fence or only build new?

Both. Tear-out and disposal of the old fence is included in the written scope. If some of the existing posts are still sound we will say so and price a partial replacement, since there is no reason to charge you for posts that do not need replacing.

Do you build fences for pools?

Yes, and pool enclosures have their own code requirements around height, gaps between pickets, and self-closing self-latching gates. Ornamental aluminum is the usual choice because it meets the requirements, resists corrosion around chlorinated water, and does not block the view of the pool.
